Mood Food

Feeling sluggish or down in the dumps? Your diet might be to blame. There are a few foods that can help you with a perky attitude.

Omega-3 Fatty acids – Includes cold water fish, such as salmon and sardines, flax seed, walnuts, nuts and seeds. The fat in these foods help the brain cells and neurotransmitters function properly and possibly help some folks with depression. Continue Reading

Growing Your Own Food: An Update

I thought I would share my current gardening passion and the progress that has occurred with my garden gutters. My seeds have started to sprout! The photos below will show the progress that has been made in about 2 months. Just so everyone is aware, it has been a warmer winter in So Cal. I did plant some heirloom variety lettuces in one of the garden gutters. I planted strawberry seeds in my other garden gutter. You can see the photo of the small strawberry seed that are just starting. The benefit: I’ve not seen bugs; this includes slugs and pill bugs which usually eat tender seedlings. Continue Reading

GMO’s in My Foods?

Several years ago I received the book Seeds Of Deception by Jeffrey Smith and was dismayed, to say the least, at the frequency of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) in the food we eat. What upsets me even more is that manufactures don’t even have to label it on the package or tell us that the potato we eat might be modified with a fungicide in it. Continue Reading

The Beet – in Toronto

The Beet

The Beet What used to be known a the sketchy Junction, just north of the adorable Bloor West Village has quickly been turning into quite the Artistic Community.  Raw food restaurants, Art Festivals, and organic markets and cafes have been popping up all over this neighborhood, slowly transforming this area into a new up-and-coming area.

My all time favorite restaurant for brunch and where I make sure to go probably 3 times a week at least when I visit Toronto is the organic restaurant, The Beet.  Continue Reading

Finding Your Passion

Garden Gutter

Sharon, ever since you mentioned that you should find your passion, I can’t stop thinking about it! I keep thinking what is ‘my’ passion?

These were the words from a woman in my class. Let’s not jump to conclusions here…I will be the first one to tell you that I’m not the expert. It didn’t occur to me to pursue a “passion” until I was in my thirties after I got married. Now, your thinking, “What does this have to do with nutrition?” Here’s how: Continue Reading

Is Junk Food Dangerous?

If you haven’t been watching Dr Oz on television, then you might not have heard about the high levels of arsenic in apple juice. Apple juice made from apple juice concentrate, 60% of which comes from China, has been linked to high levels of arsenic. Why is this a concern? Arsenic along with other heavy metals is known to cause cancer. Continue Reading

Natural Beauty: Inside and Out

As we approach the winter, we want to be eating healthier food options. Eating a variety of foods will help boost our immune system and reduce the signs of aging. There is more research out there that what we eat is better for our skin than all the makeup and moisturizer we use. So here is a list of foods that are high in antioxidants. Antioxidants help fight the free radicals that can contribute to cancer inside our bodies. Continue Reading

Waist Not, Want Not!

Did Mom ever tell you to finish your meal?  Well, luckily,  you don’t have to listen to her anymore!  Sorry to break it to all the Mom’s out there but your advice could have been influential to some overweight adults out there. Don’t let the size of the meal you order control how much you consume.  Stop eating when you are full even if there is food left on your plate.  Even if it is just one last bite.  If you leave one last bite now, next time you may leave two bites, and so on.  Just because it’s on your plate, doesn’t mean your body still wants or needs the extra food.  You’ll feel lighter and more energetic as your digestive system won’t be unnecessarily overworked.  Save your leftovers for a midday snack when you’re really craving something tasty again!  With three meals a day, (and some healthy snacks) over the course of a year, these untouched bites could result in quite a few shed pounds.

The Benefits of Carbohydrates

I’m often told by folks that they are going to “cut carbs” out of their diet. I know they are thinking one thing and I’m thinking another. Most folks are considering cookies, rice, pasta, the (more than) occasional doughnut. I almost always hear my diabetic patients mention this, as well. So let’s discuss why we should have some carbohydrates in our diet and which ones we should be eating. Continue Reading

Becoming a Backyard Farmer

The ‘growing’ trend of growing your own edibles offers benefits on many levels. Yes, you can be an urban backyard farmer, whether you only have a small area or a large lot. I started out with one tomato plant and a few potted herbs. I’ve now evolved to half of my backyard being a plentiful producer for myself, my family and my friends. Continue Reading

A Guide to Saving Seeds

Maybe it was the unbelievably tasty heirloom tomato you ate at brunch, or an herb whose scent reminds you of childhood. Or maybe you want to take a stand against the constrictive grip of global seed & chemical companies who dictate the world’s daily diet while threatening biodiversity and human health. You might want to save money and grow plants from seeds you know have not been treated with pesticides and so are safe for your family to eat. Continue Reading

August Garden Planning

While summer may seem far from over, August is a good month to start planning for your Fall-Winter garden. While you may continue on planting summer vegetables you love (better from starts than seeds), future success during the long hot summer days will entail regular watering and controlling pests. My experience is unless you’re by the ocean, the hot days will not be merciful to smaller starts that haven’t established their root system yet. Continue Reading
